Established in 1999 as a Government of Malawi project wholly funded by the European Union (EU). In 2012, NICE transformed into a multi-funded Public Trust incorporated under the Public Trustees Act 1968. The overall objective of NICE, as an independent and autonomous Trust, is to “contribute towards strengthening and deepening of democratic process and improved governance in Malawi for accelerated economic growth and poverty reduction.”
The Election Situation Room (ESR) is a digital platform led by the National Initiative for Civic Education (NICE) Public Trust to strengthen transparency and security during elections.
It works as a real-time monitoring hub, where observers across Malawi report incidents such as violence, intimidation, or irregularities using ICT tools. This data is then analyzed and shared with key stakeholders like the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC), civil society groups, and the media to ensure quick responses and accurate information.
By coordinating observers, collecting reliable data, and keeping the public informed, the ESR helps guarantee that elections are free, fair, peaceful, and credible. It also produces a post-election report with lessons for future reforms.
